Recently, I interviewed Henry Schertzinger, one of the Founders of N.A.N.D.O'S Nuts in Chapel Hill. Even if we haven't ever tried N.A.N.D.O'S donuts, they have definitely been a talk of the town for the past few years! I wanted to hear from him about his journey of starting his own business while still being a student-athlete, as I am interested in starting my own business in the coming year. To start off, I learned that they solely started the company because it was during covid and they were just trying to find opportunities to bring together a community. That said, his favorite part about it was that he was able to meet so many new people that he wouldn’t have met if he just stuck to his lacrosse team. His least favorite part was that it definitely was a grind and they had to wake up at 4 am the morning that they were selling to make the dough themselves because they didn’t have an industrial mixer, so it was an insane amount of work. When I asked for advice to someone that was wanting to start a business in college, he said to understand that you are the business and to always do something that you are passionate about. It doesn’t necessarily need to be something you are good at, but there is going to be a point where it gets really hard and if you don’t enjoy it, you’ll just stop.
